5 Essential Tips to Choose a Niche for Your Blog

When it comes to a blog niche, it should be a carefully selected topic area that the blog is focused around.  To put it simply, blog niche provides an indication of what the blog will be about. When you’re just starting your blogging journey, this is one of the most important questions you might come across.

While there are bloggers who write about whatever comes to their minds, these are not great blogging strategies. If you are looking at blogging as a source of income for the long term, you need to be able to pick a blog niche to start off the topic. We have outlined five tips that will help you pick the right niche for your blog.

Having an interest in the niche: Many writers start off with subjects that they think are lucrative and trending. But they might not have the required knowledge or the passion to write about these subjects. This is why you should always choose a niche you’re genuinely interested in or something you would enjoy writing.

Knowing the ins and outs of the niche: When creating a successful blog, you should add content pieces that are able to provide some value to readers. It shouldn’t be a piece full of inaccuracies and misguided assumptions, instead of helping the reader. You should thus, choose a topic that you have reasonable knowledge of. Readers expect that you will have some degree of experience within the blog niche. It is better to have a degree of professional or educational qualifications for writing certain blog niches.

Paying audience:  If your intention is to make money at some point with your blogs, you need to have an audience. Not only that, you will have to get the certainty that they will spend money on the products and services related to that specific sector. One of the best ways to check whether a particular niche has a paying audience is to look for self-published eBooks on the subject. If you find that the particular eBook has not sold properly, it’s an indication that there aren’t enough paying audience members for that particular niche.

The volume of search: After conducting keyword research, you should check the monthly search volume for the keywords you will be blogging about. To do this, target your nation plus any other large countries with relevant markets. If you get suggested keywords which are ranking higher, you might want to switch the focus of your blog to incorporate those high-priority keywords first. You should rethink your keywords if most of them only get 100 people searching for them.

Longevity of niche: Blogs that tend to focus on trends which are ephemeral tend to succeed. However, it takes time if you want to build a successful and popular blog that can stand the test of time. This is why you should always pick a blog niche that is expected to continue for years to come. Building a blog around a short-lived event won’t be worth the time and effort you put in. To counter this, you should build a body of work around a blog niche that is expected to last.  You can also change your niche slowly to pivot towards minor changes in your niche.
